What's in this blood orange cocktail?

Sort of like a classic screwdriver cocktail, this Blood Orange Ginger Cocktail recipe takes it up a notch! You can switch it up with gin instead of vodka if you'd like. Or, make it a virgin cocktail and leave out the alcohol! Here's what's in this:

    • vodka of your choice (I used Tito's)
    • freshly squeezed blood oranges (you can add some regular orange juice too)
    • ginger juice (I used No Joke Ginger from Trader Joe's)
    • sparkling water - lemon or lime
    • sliced blood orange wheels and mint sprigs for garnish

You don't need to be a mix-master to whip up this tasty cocktail!

[*See recipe card for exact quantities.]

What is the flavor of blood oranges?

Blood oranges are simply a natural mutation of standard oranges, with a dark, crimson interior flesh. They taste like they're infused with tangy red grapefruit and hints of tart cherries and raspberries.

Blood oranges only grow during the months of December to May, the winter and spring months, so go grab this delicious citrus fruit while you can! (I got my package of blood oranges at Trader Joe's.)

    Are blood oranges healthy?

Blood oranges, like many types of citrus, are full of vitamin C and other important vitamins. The antioxidants, minerals, and other nutrients in blood oranges can provide many other health benefits, lowering your risk of chronic health problems like cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Drink up!

How do you make a blood orange ginger cocktail?

This cocktail recipe could not be any easier to make! Here's how to put it together:

    1. Using a citrus squeezer, or other juicer, squeeze ¼ cup of blood orange juice (if you're making two cocktails).
    2. Fill a cocktail glass with ice. Pour in the blood orange juice, ginger juice, and vodka. Add a splash of citrus-flavored sparkling water.
    3. Lightly stir. Garnish with sliced orange wheels and sprigs of fresh mint.

Add in a shot of tangy, spicy ginger juice. I got mine at Trader Joe's, but you can also buy it here on Amazon.

Bottoms up! I promise, this refreshing Blood Orange Ginger Cocktail will be your new fave! It's very lo-cal too, so no need to feel guilty!

More ways to use blood oranges

Here are some great ideas for using up blood oranges. No need to waste!

    • Make a bubbly spritzer! Pour a dash of blood orange juice into a glass of bubbly (champagne or Prosecco). Garnish with a slice of blood orange and some mint leaves. Cheers!
    • Make a vinaigrette for salads! Whisk together the blood orange juice with dijon mustard, extra-virgin olive oil, salt, and pepper.
    • Make a glaze for salmon! Warm up blood orange juice and honey in a pot until the honey has dissolved. Pour over cooked salmon.
    • Make a sorbet! No need for an ice cream maker when making sorbet! Mix together blood orange juice, sugar, and orange liqueur (Cointreau). Pour it into a bread loaf to freeze overnight.
    • Make popsicles! Using popsicle molds, pour the blood orange cocktail mixture into the molds and freeze overnight. (Add in some simple syrup for extra sweetness, if desired.)

    Recipe notes

    • You can switch up this cocktail with gin instead of vodka if you'd like. Or, make it a virgin cocktail and leave out the alcohol!
    • I'm not into real sweet cocktails, but if you want it sweeter simply add a dash of simple syrup to your liking. Another way to sweeten this cocktail without the added sugar is to add in some regular orange juice.
    • To store whole blood oranges, you can leave them on the counter for up to four days, or put them in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
    • Blood oranges ferment quickly, so they should be used the same day they're juiced.
