This Furikake Chex Mix Recipe is a highly addictive, sweet and salty snack made with a combo of your favorite cereals and snack foods, mixed with Japanese Furikake seasoning, and baked in a syrupy, soy-butter sauce. It's a fantastic, Hawaiian twist on the original!

Two bowls of Furikake Chex Mix, one with a silver scoop, on a gray surface with a linen napkin and baking tray of Chex Mix on the side.

I kid you not, this Furikake Chex Mix is like crack! Once you start, you simply cannot stop! I literally had to polish off the last bits just to stop nibbling! That's how good it is. But, don't take my word for it. Make this Chex mix recipe and see for yourself!

There are several different variations of this snack, but in my humble opinion, this is the best Furikake Chex Mix recipe out there. Just sayin'!

This popular Hawaiian party snack is a mix of your favorite chips and cereals. Remember Bugles? Yes, they're still around! I also added crunchy wasabi peas for a touch of heat and sweet. If you don't like any of these ingredients, feel free to add your own faves. Here's what you'll need for my Chex mix Furikake recipe:

    For the mix

    • Corn Chex cereal
    • Toasted Oats cereal
    • Bugles Corn Chips
    • Goldfish crackers
    • Mini pretzels
    • Wasabi peas
    • Nori Komi Furikake seasoning

    For the syrup

    • Butter
    • Sugar
    • Soy sauce
    • Organic maple syrup
    • Vegetable oil (or canola oil)
A bottle of Trader Joe's Nori Komi Furikake seasoning being held up by a woman's hand in front of a spice shelf.

    What is furikake seasoning?

Furikake is a Japanese rice seasoning typically containing dried seaweed flakes, toasted sesame seeds, dried herbs, salt, and pepper. Furikake means "to sprinkle over" in Japanese. This savory, umami-rich condiment is perfect for sprinkling over rice, fish, eggs, veggies, salads, and of course, Chex Mix!

    Where can you find furikake?

Nori Komi Furikake is available at most grocery stores in the Asian section. I often find mine at specialty stores, Trader Joe's, and online at Amazon.

How do you make furikake chex mix?

[*See recipe card for detailed instructions.]

    1. In a medium sauce pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the sugar, soy sauce, maple syrup, and canola oil until well-combined. Remove from the heat, let cool and set aside.

    2. Evenly spread the snack mixture onto two large baking trays lined with foil or parchment paper.

    3. Thoroughly toss the syrup into the snack mix to coat, toss well, and top with the Furikake seasoning.

    4. Bake low and slow for one hour, tossing the mixture every 15 minutes until crispy.

    5. Let cool before serving.

This party Chex mix makes enough for a hungry crowd, and is perfect for game-day, family gatherings, holidays, and mindless snacking.

    Want another great snack recipe?

Sriracha popcorn cakes in a gray bowl and Sriracha oyster crackers in a light gray bowl on top of a striped kitchen towel and a baking tray with more crackers on the side.

Here's another awesome snack to munch on, my Spicy Baked Sriracha Crackers! Delightfully savory and satisfyingly tangy, these buttery, flavorful crackers are a level up from your boring snack routine. Perfect for game day!

    Make it your own!

By no means, do you need to follow this exact Furikake Chex Mix recipe. That's the beauty of this crunchy, party snack. Make it your own! Here are some suggestions:

    • Choose whatever cereal and snack foods you prefer (or have on hand), like Honeycomb Cereal and Fritos Corn Chips.
    • Toss in some peanuts, or other nuts, for extra crunch.
    • Use low-sodium soy sauce for less salt.
    • Make it spicier by adding in some Sriracha seasoning.
    • Most Chex mix recipes call for Karo Syrup, but I used organic maple syrup for sweetness because it's a bit healthier. Either way is fine!

TOP TIP: Make sure to toss the Chex mix every 15 minutes while baking so the mixture bakes evenly and doesn't stick together.

    Recipe notes

    • Make sure to toss the Chex mix thoroughly with the syrup so everything is coated well before baking.
    • I used two large baking trays for this recipe, but you can use two deep aluminum pans as well. Just make sure to toss the mixture every 15 minutes while baking.
    • If you're not serving this Furikake Chex Mix right away, you can store it in a tightly sealed container for up to two to three weeks.
